A Zero-Footprint DICOM WADO-based System for Viewing Clinical Data on Mobile or Web-based Applications

Mobile display technologies and web-based applications on desktop computers could improve clinical experiences and workflow efficiency by reducing delays due to access to pertinent clinical data through dedicated PACS workstations.

However, since imaging information shared across devices contains patients' private medical information, implementing mobile display technology in the field of medicine should comply with standards such as DICOM WADO for handling imaging studies as well as HIPAA Security Guidance for Remote Use of and Access to Electronic Protected Health Information (EPHI).

Although many currently available mobile medical display solutions are implemented to store downloaded medical images on the devices' memories for performance needs, these solutions may cause security concerns if the device is lost or stolen and loss of patients' EPHI.

One possible solution for mobile display technology, while meeting HIPAA requirements, is to employ a zero-footprint technology. Zero-footprint solution is a type of implementation, where any relevant information is stored in the server and accessible only at the time of use.

The DICOM WADO-compliant system is the first system that tightly coupled integration with the Fuji Synapse 3.2.1 PACS as well as workflow designed data delivery that is seamless to the user in order to improve performance and which other zero-footprint solutions do not offer.

The DICOM WADO-compliant system has three major components.

  • Web server: communicates directly with Synapse 3.2.1 database and storage in a similar fashion as the Synapse 3.2.1 Web Application.
  • Local storage cache: improve performance for the user.
  • Meta data storage: maintained by the system to improve performance by reducing the need for multiple queries for the same study to the Synapse 3.2.1 PACS Database by making a cache of the results of the query for a short amount of time.
