Segmentation

Regions of interest are subjected to segmentation function in order to separate the bony structure, soft tissue (preliminary segmentation), and cartilage if any (subregion segmentation). The results of the segmentation are used to:

• select method of analysis
• calculate features (prebubertal children)
• locate precisely the phalangeal axis and gap between epiphysis and metaphysis (fusion assessment).

Selection of analysis method

After the segmentation appropiate analysis method is applied:

• Prepubertal children
  Epiphyseal size & shape analysis

• Pubertal children
  Epiphyseal fusion advancement analysis
